  • Rehoboth Beach patrol: Surf calms as Earl exits

The captain of the Rehoboth Beach patrol says rough surf in the aftermath of Earl has calmed.

Capt. Kent Buckson says the surf was calmer Sunday morning than Saturday when 6- to 7-foot tall waves caused a number of injuries. No rescues or other incidents were reported Sunday morning, but Buckson said waves were expected to increase in size Sunday afternoon as high tide approaches.

Lifeguards at Rehoboth Beach kept people out of the water Friday because of the storm, but the beaches were reopened on Saturday.

  • Army eyes troop train in Va

The Army has given the green light to moving soldiers by rail between Petersburg's Fort Lee and Fort A.P. Hill in Bowling Green.

Soldiers from Fort Lee routinely travel by bus for training at Fort A.P. Hill, a 150-mile roundtrip.

Fort Lee spokesman Keith Desbois told the Progress-Index in Petersburg that details are still being worked out on the switch from bus to rail. They include the purchase of rail cars and locomotives.

Virginia Railway Express officials have received permission to sell rail cars and locomotives to the Army.

The military is seeking safer ways to transport troops.

Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Michael R. Turner (OH-3) announced the United States House of Representatives unanimously passed a resolution congratulating the University of Dayton men's basketball team for winning the 2010 National Invitation Tournament basketball championship.  H.Res. 1456 had the support of the entire Ohio Congressional Delegation.

“The University of Dayton Men’s Basketball Team is a significant part of the culture around campus and the downtown area,” Congressman Turner said. “UD has been in the NCAA's top 35 in home attendance every season since UD arena opened in 1969. The students, faculty, supporters and alumni, including myself, are extremely proud of their championship caliber basketball program.”

On April 1st, 2010 the University of Dayton Men’s Basketball Team defeated the University of North Carolina 79 to 68 in the National Invitational Tournament Championship game.  The team’s NIT Championship win was its third in school history.

In addition to its success on the court, the men’s basketball program has graduated every senior student-athlete since Brian Gregory was named head coach in 2003, including seven players this season.  The University of Dayton consistently ranks high nationally in student-athlete graduation rates.
