  • Rehoboth Beach patrol: Surf calms as Earl exits

    The captain of the Rehoboth Beach patrol says rough surf in the aftermath of Earl has calmed.

    Capt. Kent Buckson says the surf was calmer Sunday morning than Saturday when 6- to 7-foot tall waves caused a number of injuries. No rescues or other incidents were reported Sunday morning, but Buckson said waves were expected to increase in size Sunday afternoon as high tide approaches.

    Lifeguards at Rehoboth Beach kept people out of the water Friday because of the storm, but the beaches were reopened on Saturday.

  • Army eyes troop train in Va

    The Army has given the green light to moving soldiers by rail between Petersburg's Fort Lee and Fort A.P. Hill in Bowling Green.

    Soldiers from Fort Lee routinely travel by bus for training at Fort A.P. Hill, a 150-mile roundtrip.

    Fort Lee spokesman Keith Desbois told the Progress-Index in Petersburg that details are still being worked out on the switch from bus to rail. They include the purchase of rail cars and locomotives.

    Virginia Railway Express officials have received permission to sell rail cars and locomotives to the Army.

    The military is seeking safer ways to transport troops.

    Dayton Ballet School, the official school of Dayton Ballet, announces guest faculty and class schedule for the Young Dancer Intensive (July 12- 23) and Summer Intensive (July 26 – August 20) summer programs. Classes are offered at two locations: Centerville (Susan S. Kettering South) and at Downtown Dayton Ballet Studios.

    The Young Dancer Intensive session is a two-week, half day camp for experienced young dance students ages 9-13 offering classes in Ballet Technique, Pointe Barre, Modern, Jazz and Character.  Young Dancer Intensive occurs at both Dayton Ballet School locations and is held July 12-23.

    The Summer Intensive session is for the more advanced ballet student with a strong emphasis cultivating a well-rounded dancer with classes in Advanced Ballet Technique, Pointe/Variations, Jazz, Modern and a new class – Theatre Dance. Summer Intensive camp is a 4-week session, July 26 – August 20, and is held only at the Downtown branch of Dayton Ballet School.  An informal performance will highlight the advanced level students who attended the entire four-week session. It will be held on Friday, August 20 at 3 PM.

    Evening summer classes also occur throughout the summer, beginning July 26, are: Creative Movement, Pre-Ballet, Ballet I, Adult Ballet and Zumba dance and are held at the Susan S. Kettering South School in Centerville.
